EMDR Therapy- Adults, Children, and Couples

The Adaptive Information Processing (AIP) model:

The AIP model is the theoretical foundation of EMDR therapy, proposing that the brain has an innate ability to process and store memories adaptively. When trauma occurs, this information processing system is overwhelmed, leaving distressing memories “stuck” in an unprocessed state. EMDR helps the brain reprocess these memories by engaging its natural healing mechanisms, allowing for adaptive integration of the experience, reducing symptoms, and forming healthier connections with new information.

EMDR uses bilateral stimulation to activate the brain’s natural processing system, allowing these memories to be reprocessed and linked to more positive and functional information, leading to symptom relief.

“Trauma is not what happens to you. Trauma is what happens inside you, as a result of what happened to you”

Conditions EMDR can help with:

Trauma-related disorders: PTSD, complex trauma, and other stress-related conditions stemming from traumatic events or adverse childhood experiences.
Anxiety and Panic: Performance anxiety, panic attacks, and general anxiety disorders.
Depression: By processing guilt and shame associated with past negative experiences, which can alleviate depressive symptoms.
Phobias: Specific fears and irrational beliefs learned from past experiences.
Chronic Pain: Reducing pain intensity and improving coping in individuals with chronic pain conditions.
Eating Disorders: Addressing underlying traumatic events that may have contributed to the development of the eating disorder.
Grief and Loss: Complicated grief resulting from significant loss.
Addictions and Compulsive Behaviors: Treating compulsive behaviors and substance abuse linked to unresolved trauma or negative beliefs.
Low Self-Esteem and Self-Beliefs: Challenging persistent negative self-beliefs and improving self-worth.

Effectiveness of EMDR:

EMDR is a proven clinical modality for the treatment of trauma, in particular for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). In 2010 the Australian Psychological Society (APS) noted it as a Level 1 treatment for PTSD; the highest rating that can be applied to a specific therapeutic approach.

The World Health Organisation endorses EMDR for the treatment of PTSD and EMDR is listed on Australia’s list of approved Focused Psychological Strategies and endorsed by Australian Association Social Work (AASW) and Australian Psychological Society (APS). Internationally, EMDR is endorsed by the International Society of Traumatic Stress Studies (ISTSS).

Brooke is an Accredited EMDR Practitioner and has experience working with adults, adolescence, children and couples. EMDR is a transformational modality that assists in healing from trauma, move through through emotions, challenge negative beliefs and integrate adaptive beliefs to help you move on with life. When traumatic experiences are processed, you become unstuck, and can thrive independently and in your relationships with others.
