EMDR Therapy

The Adaptive Information Processing (AIP) model:

EMDR relies on the Adaptive Information Processing (AIP) model, a theory about how your brain stores memories. This theory, developed by Francine Shapiro, PhD, who also developed EMDR, recognizes that your brain stores normal and traumatic memories differently. Often, your brain stores trauma memories in a way that doesn’t allow for healthy healing. Trauma is like a wound that your brain hasn’t been allowed to heal. Because it didn’t have the chance to heal, your brain didn’t receive the message that the danger is over. Because of this, your brain becomes ‘stuck’ in a survival state.

The Eight Phases of EMDR:

EMDR has a specific structure comprising of eight phases and our therapist will work alongside you through these stages. These include 1) History taking and information gathering
2) Preparation and education
3) Assessment of target memory
4) Desensitisation and reprocessing
5) Installation
6) Body scan
7) Session closure
8) Re-Evaluation

Can be useful for:

EMDR helps you process the negative images, emotions, beliefs and body sensations associated with traumatic memories that seem to be stuck. These can contribute to a range of mental health problems.
EMDR helps you to see things from a different perspective and relieves the symptoms that you were suffering. Researched as the primary treatment for PTSD, it can also be useful for depression, anxiety, addictions, phobias, conflict in relationships, and other mental health presentations.

Effectiveness of EMDR:

EMDR is a proven clinical modality for the treatment of trauma, in particular for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). In 2010 the Australian Psychological Society (APS) noted it as a Level 1 treatment for PTSD; the highest rating that can be applied to a specific therapeutic approach.

The World Health Organisation endorses EMDR for the treatment of PTSD and EMDR is listed on Australia’s list of approved Focused Psychological Strategies and endorsed by Australian Association Social Work (AASW) and Australian Psychological Society (APS)
